About the Role

The Prison Services Caseworker is responsible for providing support services to assist inmates with tasks like obtaining identification, completing taxes, clothing needs, and employment support. This full time position will perform 50% of their duties at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Center and 50% of their duties at our Community Residential Facility.


What You Will Be Doing


Administration

  • Respond to all inmate applications for pre-release services
  • Assist with coordinating, Basic Construction Awareness, Hospitality, and Indigenous Culinary Arts training
  • Assist ICL with monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical and activity reports
  • Complete Prison Services monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical and activity reports
  • Attend meetings as required by Program Consultant

Client Support

  • Assist and support inmates when completing JHS pre-release assessment package
  • Assist inmates with ID application and preparation of tax forms
  • Source seasonal clothing from thrift stores
  • Provide affordable housing information before release
  • Provide job search information and assist inmates with resumes and job search skills
  • In consultation with VIRCC program staff, design and deliver monthly basic life skills workshops (Communications Skills for the workplace, Ready to Rent, Tax preparation and Budgeting skills)
  • Provide inmates with various post - release supports

Community Engagement

  • Act as a resource to Correctional staff and other contractors as needed


What You Will Need

  • Education in social work, mediation, or related field
  • Working knowledge of Restorative Justice practices
  • Experience supporting youth and adults involved in the justice system
  • Experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of youth and adult community-based programs and specialized services
  • Ability to write high-quality grant proposal narratives and applications
  • Ability to develop digital platforms to raise the profile of the JHS Restorative Justice programs


Work Expectations

  • Ability to provide clear criminal and vulnerable sector background checks.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license with access to a vehicle.
